BERLIN, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Serhou Guirassy was in high spirits during postmatch interviews, switching between French and German as he entertained broadcasters after Borussia Dortmund's 4-0 win over Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League.
The striker's struggles through a winless November now seemed distant after scoring twice in Wednesday's match. TV cameras captured a light moment before his penalty that made it 2-0, when Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck handed Guirassy the ball and planted a quick kiss on his neck.
Schlotterbeck said the gesture was meant to calm nerves after earlier disagreements over penalty duties between Guirassy and teammate Ramy Bensebaini.
"He hadn't had overwhelmingly good times lately, and this was meant to support and encourage him," Schlotterbeck said.
Rumors have circulated about a winter exit, with reported interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Arsenal. German outlet Sport-Bild noted an exit clause of 50 million euros that becomes valid in summer 2026 and suggested Dortmund would only consider offers above 80 million this winter, while viewing Hoffenheim forward Fisnik Asllani as a potential successor.
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl and CEO Lars Ricken have denied plans to sell Guirassy in January.
Despite his recent drought, Guirassy has nine goals and five assists in 17 appearances this season. He said he was relieved to contribute again.
"You can't consistently score," he said. "Today I am pleased to have delivered my share."
Guirassy acknowledged recent pressure and sleepless nights but said he relied on what he jokingly called "the striker law" to stay patient.
Coach Niko Kovac scheduled extra finishing sessions in recent days and shouted encouragement from the sideline: "Score, guys, score." Guirassy appeared more relaxed with each attempt.
"Serhou is one of Europe's best, and like any other top striker, he sometimes faces tough times," Kovac said. "But he should never forget his abilities. He's not only scoring, he's also important as a link to midfield. He's our life insurance." ■
